오늘날 세계는 아직도 각종 전쟁과 전염병의 위협으로부터 완전히 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 평화와 자유, 안전을 지키기 위한 공동의 노력에도 불구하고 여전히 불안과 위기를 조성하는 많은 위험 요소를 현실은 안고 있다. 게다가 날로 증가하는 기후 위기와 환경적 재앙 앞에서 고비용의 대가를 치러야 하는 큰 어려움에 직면하고 있다. 이런 상황을 타개해 나갈 용기와 지혜를 우리는 헌신적인 인류의 현자들로부터 아니면 예술가들의 미학적 비전 같은 데에서 깨닫게 될 때가 많았다. 예술가는 어떤 상황에서도 반목과 대립을 극복하고 서로 조화되는 밝은 이상을 꿈꾸며 앞으로 나아가려는 존재들이라고 믿고 그들의 다양한 예술작품에서 위안과 각성을 받아왔었다. 그래서 이번 미술제의 주제를 우리가 함께 생각해 볼 가치로서 “다양성과 공존”이라고 정했다. 다양성과 공존은 현대예술의 흐름 전반에서 나타나는 특성이기도 하고 새로운 시대적 예술의 미학적 비전으로서 또한 국제사회가 더불어 추구해야 할 가치적 의미를 담고 있는 개념으로도 볼 수 있어서다. 예술가들이 꿈꾸고 지향하는 비전에는 언제나 새로움과 그리고 다양성과 공존하는 조화가 있으며 모든 예술작품에 관철되고 있는 시대정신이라고 생각한다. 이번 미술제에 참여하는 모든 작가의 다양한 양식과 주제 속에서 우리가 함께 평화를 추구하고 지켜나가는데 필요한 지혜와 용기를 얻게 되기를 희망한다.
〈달성 대구현대미술제〉가 올해로 제12회를 맞았다. 전국적인 작가들의 참여로 10년 이상 지속되어 오는 동안 창립 당시의 예술정신을 계승하면서도 현대적인 미술제로서의 양적 규모나 초점의 방향은 해마다 조금씩 달리해 왔다. 특히 올해에는 달성군의 문화도시 지정을 기념해 전반적인 모습을 크게 쇄신하여 밖으로 국제성을 지향하는 한편 지역과 좀 더 밀착하고 시민들에게 더 가까이 다가갈 수 있는 질적 양적 변모를 동시에 추구하고자 했다. 첫 번째 새로운 시도의 하나로서 매년 야외 조각 설치작업 위주로 펼쳐지던 광장 중심에 건축적인 구조의 설치작업을 채택해 주변 환경과 자연을 더욱 특징 있게 받아들이는 장소 특정적인 예술의 성격을 강화했다. 두 번째는 처음으로 디아크 건물 내로 전시 면적을 확대하여 실내 공간에 설치작업은 물론 평면 작품의 전시도 수용할 수 있게 하여 출품 작품의 양식과 장르를 확대했다. 셋째 다양한 장르로의 확대는 야외 광장의 설치작품 구성에서도 반영되어 영상 미디어 작품과 입체 조각은 물론 파빌리온을 건축하여 섬세한 성격의 설치작품들을 광장 전시로 연장했다. 네 번째로 한층 다양해진 작가들과 출품작들에 관한 해설과 전 작품에 관한 상세한 정보를 캡션과 리플렛, 전시 후 도록에 실어 관객들에게 설명이 풍부한 전시가 되도록 애쓰려 한다. 마지막으로 초청 작가의 구성에 있어서는 창조적 개성이 높게 평가받을 만한 지역의 원로 및 중견작가들과 실험적인 청년 미술 등 다양한 장르에서 섭외하였다. 특히 해외 작가들의 참여 폭을 크게 늘려 지역 미술의 국제적 동시대성을 제고하고 향후 세계적인 컨템퍼러리 예술 행사로 발돋움할 수 있는 계기를 마련하고자 했다. 이번에 해외 거주 한국 작가들을 포함하여 국제적으로 경계를 넘나들며 활동하고 있는 동시대 젊은 작가들이 주로 초대되었다.
널리 알려진 바와 같이 달성문화재단에서 주관하는 이 행사는 과거 대구현대미술제의 예술사적 의미를 되새기면서 시대에 앞서갔던 대구미술의 진취적인 정신을 계승한다는 취지를 미술제 정신의 바탕에 두고 있다. 1970년대 비록 지방에서 전개했던 미술제였으나 지역이 주체가 되어 전국적인 미술운동에 주도적으로 참여하고 독자적인 미술 행사로 발전시켜봤던 경험은 오늘날 우리 달성 현대미술제의 목표에도 훌륭한 본보기이다. 그래서 2023년 달성 대구현대 미술제는 진취성과 자생성을 갖춘 지역 미술의 우수한 전통을 계승 발전시켜 국제적인 규모의 미술 행사로 확장해 나갈 것을 현실적 목표로 세워놓고 있다.
Today, the world is still faced with the threat of various wars and infectious diseases. Despite joint efforts for peace, freedom, and security, the reality still faces many risk factors that create anxiety and crisis. Moreover, in the face of the ever-increasing climate crisis and environmental disaster, we are facing the great challenge of having to pay a high price. In search for an answer to overcome such situation, we have been turned to wise men of humanity or aesthetic vision of artists. Through that, we’ve got courage and wisdom through various works of art, believing that artists are beings who overcome antagonism and conflict in any situation and dreamt of bright ideals that are in harmony with each other to move forward. The aesthetic visions of this time is “Diversity and Coexistence” as values for all of us to conceive. In the vision that artists dream and quest, often there is a harmony where novelty and diversity coexist. Those spirit of the times are permeated throughout the exhibited works. The exhibition calls directly for peace, justice and the building of more resilient cities and infrastructure, action on climate change and more. We hope the festival can function as catalyst to borderless and timeless conversations which bears tremendous values to international community at this crucial moment in time.
Dalseong Daegu Contemporary Art Festival marks its 12th anniversary this year. While it has continued for more than 10 years with the participation of artists from all over the country, the artistic spirit at the time of its founding has been inherited, while the quantitative scale and direction of focus as a modern art festival have varied slightly each year. In particular, this year, in commemoration of Dalseong-gun’s designation as a cultural city, the overall appearance is greatly transformed for the diversity, while simultaneously pursuing qualitative and quantitative changes that would allow it to get closer to the region and citizens. As one of the new attempts, an architectural structure installation is adopted in the center of the square, where outdoor sculpture installations were mainly performed every year, strengthening the site-specific nature of art that embraces the surrounding environment and nature in a more distinctive way. Second, for the first time, the exhibition area expands to the The Arc Culture Center to diversify the style and genre of the exhibited works, accommodating both installation works and two-dimensional works, Third, the expansion into various genres reflects the composition of the installation works at The Arc Square, extending the delicate nature of the installation works to the outside area by constructing a pavilion housing video media works and three-dimensional sculptures. Fourth, commentary on the more diverse artists and works on display and detailed information on all works were included in captions, leaflets, and post-exhibition catalogues, making the exhibition more informative to the audience. Lastly, the scope of the participating artists’ generation is expanded, from local senior artists recognized for the novelty of their work to young artists who engage in experimental work with critical perspectives. In particular, we aimed borderless participation of artists to enhance the international contemporaneity.
Daegu Contemporary Art Festival, hosted by the Dalseong Cultural Foundation, is based on the spirit of the art festival with the purpose of recalling the art historical significance of the Daegu Contemporary Art Festival of the past and inheriting the progressive art movement occurred in Daegu, In the 1970s, started as a local art festival, the experience of the region taking the lead in participating in the national art movement and developing it into an independent art event is an great example for the goals of our Dalseong Contemporary Art Festival today. Therefore, 2023 Daegu Contemporary Art Festival aim to inherit and develop the original initiatives of Daegu Contemporary Art Festival with progressiveness and self-reliance as an international art event.
