서양화를 전공한 작가는 1990년대부터 숯을 모티프로 한 표현작업에 집중해왔다. ‘숯’의 표현 가능성은 일찍이 학창 시절 목탄 소묘를 기초로 배우는 과정에 경험하는 것이지만 이미 중견 화가로서 그 성질을 실험하며 탐구하여 실천하는 예는 드물다. 작가는 미니멀한 모노크롬 회화나 제스추얼 페인팅의 바탕 위에서 동양의 수묵 정신을 재해석한 회화와 설치를 선보여왔다. ‘붓질(Brushstroke)’ 시리즈는 넓은 귀얄 붓을 사용해 숯가루가 섞인 먹물로 그린 붓 자국이 돋보이는 작품으로, 삶과 죽음, 순환과 나눔 등 숯이 가진 태생적 관념, 위로, 작가의 몸짓과 호흡, 기운생동의 에너지가 담긴다. 이배 작가에게 붓질 작업은 동양화의 전통에서처럼 규칙적이고 꾸준한 태도를 통해 생성되는 과정의 결과물로, "현대미술은 영감에서 나오는 것이 아니라 태도나 과정에서 나온다”라고 하는 말과도 깊이 관련된다.

The artist concentrates on expressive work using charcoal as a motif since the 1990s. The artist did not forsake his former style but experimented and explored its properties as a mid-career artist and putting it into practice with ink make of charcoal. The artist presented paintings and installations that reinterpret the Oriental ink-and-wash spirit on the basis of minimal monochrome paintings or gestural paintings. The 'Brushstroke' series stands out with brush marks drawn with ink mixed with charcoal powder using a wide brush, and symbolizes the innate nature of charcoal such as ephemerality, circulation, the brush strokes contains the momentum of energy and vitality. For artist Lee Bae, brushwork is the result of a process created through a regular and steady attitude, as in the tradition of oriental painting, and is deeply related to his saying, “Contemporary art does not come from inspiration, but from attitude or process.”
